Career Placement Interviewing Policy and Ethics

  • Always conduct yourself professionally throughout the interview process.

  • Only schedule an employer interview when you have a sincere interest in the position available. Do not schedule an interview for the sole purpose of practicing your interviewing skills. Research employers before and after interviews so that you can make a knowledgeable, informed decision about your future employment

  • It is unethical to accept offers for expense paid trips to visit an employer's office if you have no real interest in working for that employer.

  • Honor all appointments and commitments you make with an employer. You should be punctual and appropriately dressed for all interviews. Letters of apology and explanation should be sent to employers when appointments are missed or commitments are broken.

  • Once you accept a job offer, you should not interview with other employers.

  • It is unethical to renege or refuse a job offer which you have previously accepted. If a change must be made, a detailed written explanation must be submitted to the employer and your counselor in this office.

  • Thank you letters are strongly recommended as a follow-up to each interview.

  • It is not appropriate to bring babies or children to employer-sponsored events, unless specifically invited to do so.

  • When employers are on campus interviewing, only those students who have previously scheduled appointments are authorized to visit with company recruiters. Students interrupting recruiters is strictly forbidden.

  • Rudeness, demanding behavior or demeaning remarks towards employers are never appropriate. This also includes when you have been rejected for a job or interview opportunity.

Remember that you represent more than just yourself. Brigham Young University has a reputation for producing graduates with high ethical standards. The university expects you to do your part to help maintain that reputation with employers not only before you are hired, but also during your subsequent employment.
