Academic Dismissal

Academic Suspension

Students on academic probation who earn less than a 2.0 GPA in at least six credits after having been placed on probation are academically suspended from the university. A student who is academically suspended is not eligible to enroll in BYU day, evening or extension courses for at least twelve months. (Students may enroll in Independent Study courses.)

After the twelve-month period a student may apply for readmission to the university.

Registration for Evening or Extension Courses. After twelve months, an academically suspended student may register for BYU evening or extension courses, without any special requirements from the Academic Support Office. The Academic Support Office will work with Evening School or an Extension Center to temporarily remove the registration block.

Readmission to the University. If an academically suspended student wishes to be readmitted to the university to continue work on a bachelor's degree, the student may apply for readmission after twelve months by completing Parts 1, 2 and 3 of the admission packet.

Students, who have been academically suspended and are readmitted, return to the university on academic probation. They will receive a packet of information from the Academic Support Office instructing them on the requirements to register for classes.

If a student is planning to return to the university from suspension and has questions about the process, the student is encouraged to contact the Academic Support Office in 2500 WSC or call 801-422-2723.

All students returning from suspension are required to meet the following requirements before they are permitted to register, since a block will be placed on their registration.

  1. Complete the Academic Success Workbook.
  2. Complete a graduation plan, which must be signed by both the supervisor of a student's College Advisement Center and a Faculty Member.
  3. Meet with a Faculty Member, who signs the graduation plan and the Academic Improvement Plan.
  4. Meet with an advisor from the Academic Support Office. The advisor will discuss with the student his or her academic history, review the student's plan to improve academically, and explain the student's responsibilities as a returning suspended student. The student and the advisor prepare and sign an Academic Contract.

Meeting with an advisor from the Academic Support Office is the last official step to have the registration block removed; however, in some instances, it may be helpful for a student to meet with an advisor before beginning the process, to assure that the student understands all that is expected to have the block removed.

Fast Track Back. If a suspended student has at least a 2.0 BYU cumulative grade point average, the student may opt for the Fast Track Back option, which allows a student to return after six months. Further information on this program may be found by referring to the Academic Support's web page, "Fast Track Back."

Petitioning Time Away for Suspension. In very rare instances, a student may be granted an exception to the time-away requirement of academic suspension. Because the university has determined that academically suspended students benefit from the time-away requirement of academic suspension, only under extraordinary circumstances are students granted an exception.

Further information about the petition process can be found by clicking here or by contacting the Support Office in 2500 WSC.

Academic Dismissal

If a student is suspended a second time, the student is academically dismissed from the university.

When a student is academically dismissed, the student:

  • May not enroll in BYU day, evening or extension courses for a minimum of three years.
  • May - after two years - petition the Academic Standards Committee for a change of current standing to probation. If the student's petition is successful, the student is allowed to apply for readmission to the university.
  • May--after three years--enroll in BYU evening or extension courses, without completing any special requirements through the Academic Support Office or the Academic Standards Committee. The Academic Support Office will coordinate with BYU Evening School or an Extension to have the registration block temporarily lifted to allow the student to register.

Petitioning to Return from Dismissal. The Academic Standards Committee will consider petitions from students who have been academically dismissed from the university and who are requesting that they be permitted to continue as degree-seeking students. Because academically dismissed students have been given several opportunities to succeed at the university, consideration for approval will only be given to those students who demonstrate in their petitions extraordinary circumstances and substantially improved potential for success at the university.

In almost all instances, it is recommended that if a student has been academically dismissed from the university, the student give strong consideration to attending another school that may provide an opportunity to begin his or her academic program anew.

Further information on the petition process is available by clicking here.
