The following is a summary of the university's academic standing policy. For a detailed description, please refer to the official policy printed in the current class schedule or click here to access a copy of that page.

If you have a specific question, please contact the Academic Support Office in 2500 WSC or call 801-422-2723.

The academic standing policy of the university is based on 2.0 GPA standard.

  1. When a semester/term GPA falls below 2.0--

Whenever a student earns a semester or term GPA below 2.0 and has accrued at least six credits since his or her last academic standing computation, the student is placed on academic warning, probation, suspension or dismissal.

    If a student was on:
    • Good standing, the student is placed on Academic Warning.
    • Academic Warning, the student is placed on Academic Probation.
    • Academic Probation, the student is placed on Academic Suspension
    • Academic Probation and previously suspended, the student is placed on Academic Dismissal

  2. When a semester/term GPA is at least a 2.0 & BYU cumulative GPA is at least 2.0--

Whenever a student earns a semester or term GPA of at least 2.0 and has accrued at least six credits since his or her last academic standing computation, the student's academic standing is changed to Good or Previous.

    If a student was on:
    • Warning, the student is placed on Good Standing.
    • Probation, the student is placed on Previous Standing.

  3. When a semester/term GPA is at least a 2.0 but BYU cumulative GPA is below 2.0--

Whenever a student earns a semester or term GPA of at least 2.0 and has accrued at least six credits since his or her last academic standing computation but still has a BYU cumulative GPA below 2.0, the student's academic standing is unchanged.

  4. When a student has not accrued six credits since his or her last academic standing computation--

Regardless of a student's semester/term GPA and BYU cumulative GPA, if the student has completed less than six credits since his or her last academic standing computation, the student remains on the standing of that semester or term.

The graded hours and grade points for that semester or term will be added to future enrollments until the minimum of six credits is achieved. When the six credit threshold is achieved, the student's academic standing will be computed based on all course work since the last academic standing computation.

When a student is placed on academic warning or probation, a block is placed on the student's registration during the next enrollment period. Students may find out more about registration blocks by clicking here.
