Frequently Asked Questions
What are the objectives of the Academic Improvement Plan?
- To help students identify reasons for their current academic standing and to develop activities to address those reasons.
- To demonstrate to the university that a student on Academic Warning or Probation is taking steps to improve his or her academic performance.
- To remove the academic block that has been placed on a student's record while on Academic Warning or Probation.
The Academic Improvement Plan, after it is signed by a Faculty Advisor and is submitted to the Academic Support Office by the published deadline, authorizes the Academic Support Office to remove the academic block that has been placed on a student's record. The Plan does not change a student's academic standing.
What are the steps in developing and submitting an Academic Improvement Plan?
- Complete the online Academic Success Workbook. The Academic Success Workbook is a systematic approach to identify academic obstacles, to review resources to address the obstacles, and to list specific actions to eliminate or reduce the obstacles and their effect on your academics.
After you have completed the online Academic Success Workbook, the results are automatically transferred to an Academic Improvement Plan.
- Print the three copies of the Academic Improvement Plan. Print a copy of the Plan for your Faculty Advisor to sign. This copy is submitted to the Academic Support Office, 2500 WSC, to have the academic block removed. The other two copies are for you and your Faculty Advisor.
- You are strongly encouraged to keep a copy of a signed Plan to verify that you have completed the process with your Faculty Advisor and to review your plan of action.
- Meet with a Faculty Advisor. Faculty Advisors are assigned by your college or academic department. To identify the appropriate Faculty Advisor, contact your College Advisement Center (CAC). You may access a list of the College Advisement Centers and their addresses here.
What to do when you meet your Faculty Advisor:
- Review your plan of action for improving your academic performance.
- Discuss your progress in your major and any concern you have about specific courses.
- Consider additional actions suggested by your Faculty Advisor.
- Ask your Faculty Advisor to sign your Academic Improvement Plan.
